Knowledge (temporary + sustainable + internalized)

looking at three kinds of knowledge

Knowledge refers not only to what we know but to what it means and comes in at least three kinds:

  • disposable
  • sustainable
  • internalized

Temporary knowledge

This does not actually mean data by itself (or "useless" data); rather, it refers to meaning with a short shelf-life, e.g.:

  • the location of (and directions to) a restaurant for an event will take place only once
  • the health of an athlete, to determine the outcome of a final game (after which this knowledge becomes moot)
  • the price of something, whether it is high or low, so that we can decide to sell it to buy something else

We could also call this:

  • ephemeral knowledge
  • fleeting knowledge
  • disposable knowledge

Sustainable knowledge

This kind of knowledge can not only last a long time, but we can also use it to do many different things for many different situations, e.g.:

  • using the location of a restaurant as a reference point for other locations in the future
  • learning how to use a spreadsheet to manage finances for a company (can also use it for that company, but to manage any project for any field!)
  • learning a specific software programming language (learning the first language makes learning other languages much easier, as they all have similar concepts but just different ways of writing code)

Internalized knowledge

This builds upon sustainable knowledge through regular practice:

  • we could write pages of notes about how to use a spreadsheet ... or we could practice using a spreadsheet to track our own finances so that we internalize the ability to track anyone's finances!
  • we could again write a whole bunch of notes about how to code ... or we could build projects so that we internalize the software programming language!

So, all that to say "practice makes perfect", but we have to:

  • avoid drowning in the choices of possibilities of learning
  • see how what we learn in one domain can apply to others
  • learn to learn by doing
