Metcalfe's law refers to an internet phenomenon in which an increase in users of a medium (e.g. a social network) generates an increase in usefulness of the medium.
"For every n users, the value of the medium increases on the order of n^2!"
This could apply not only to social networks but also abstractly to other facets of life such as telephone systems and social groups.
