Tycka om

"Tycka om" in Swedish, idiomatically translates to "to like" in English:

Jag tycker om det! ("I like it!")

However, when we look at what each word means, we can get some insight about what it means to "like" something:

• tycka = "to think"
• om = "about"

That's literally what "tycka om (det)" means: "I think about (it)"

So, "to like" something means "to think about" something, which kind of makes sense ... compare:

• "I like football" and "I think about football [i.e. all the time]"
• "I like her" and "I think about her [i.e. all the time]"

I always find it fun to break down a foreign phrase and see how this other language perceives an idea. They may actually "think outside the box" or "not think about the box" (see what I did there?) when it comes to phrasing!
