the Norwegian Dawn ship docked in Tallinn, Estonia on June 19:

  • walked through the Old Town Tallinn
    • a town which gave birth to the Danish flag (which the Danes still fly today), as an earlier Denmark once held this town
    • Tallinn actually means "Danish city/castle" in Estonian

Neitsitorn (Maiden's Tower)

harking back to its Danish times:

Niguliste (St Nicholas' Church)

a Lutheran church built in the 1200s and freshened up in 1981 (under Soviet times, no less):

Tallitorn (Stable Tower)

some scary hooded likenesses skulked around the city walls:

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

an Eastern Orthodox Church that shares its name with many other churches in Eastern Europe:

Raekoja plats (town square)

the downtown of Tallinn:

Russian embassy

a spot in the city with enough angry feelings:

KGB prison cells

a house that once kept "un-Soviet" spies under watch:

Tallinna linnahall

now for the "Bald and Bankrupt: that's very Soviet" shot:

a spot from the 1980 summer games that looks like it has had better days!

New Estonia?

yet they have here a "breaking free" from its "old days" with some "newness in the mix":

Old skyline

still, we should keep in our minds Tallinn's red roofs and old world skyline:
