August 29, 2003 : the Navigator of the Seas ship sailed into Cozumel, Mexico

"background"

  • took a ferry from Cozumel Island to Playa del Carmen on the Mexican mainland to see the Mayan ruins of Tulum
    • a sightseeing leader named José, himself a Mayan, talked about the Mayans on our ride to Tulum
  • at this time of my life Mexico felt like the most "far-flung land" ever set foot on, even if they set out to make it look like "what the crowds wanted to see"

"trip markers"

  • 6th "new country"
  • 5th country in North America (including Central America)
  • 1st time in Mexico
  • 1st country where Spanish was an official language
  • 1st time in Central America
