August 17, 2014 : right after hopping off the flight from Toronto, the Europe sightseeing trip took us into the heart of Rome to Vatican City, the smallest country in the world!

For something with the bigness of some North American homes, Vatican City still had a post office, a "radio station" and even the world's shortest railway!

Going in from the eastern flank of the Vatican:

  • Saint Peter's Square (Italian: Pizza San Pietro)
  • Obelisk
  • Saint Peter's Basilica
  • Sistine Chapel (Cappella Sistina)

(at the time of this visit, Argentina-born Francis was Pope of the Catholic Church, who started his "fatherhood" in 2013, the year before)

trip markers

  • 9th "new country"
  • 3rd "European country"
    • after only UK and Italy
  • 2nd "mainland European country"
    • after Italy on the same day
  • 2nd Italian-speaking country (out of 4)
  • 1st time in Vatican City
  • "smallest country in the world"
