October 5, 2024 : the Balkan sightseeing trip went from Trebinje, within the Republik Srpska of Bosnia and Herzegovina, into Dubrovnik, Croatia:

"background"

Croatia (Croatian: Hrvatska) has this sharp-angled "C" shape that:

  • "holds onto" Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • "touches"
    • Serbia to its east
    • Montenegro to its extreme south
    • Slovenia and Hungary to its north
  • have its own kuna currency until the end of 2022, when it took in the euro
  • spoke Serbo-Croatian but wrote only in the Latin alphabet (no Cyrillic)
    • Croatian and Serbian speakers can understand each other rather well but they will each have their own "quirks"

"into Croatia"

this trip took us to the furthest south Croatian swath called "Dalmatia" and our time there lasted only from late morning to early evening:

  • a morning look at the walled town of Dubrovnik
  • an afternoon ferry ride to Koločep with a beach away from town

Dubrovnik has its well-known clout for fans of The Game of Thrones, a show not watched by me (still, the narrow streets going up and down, snaking in and out, gave me enough to look at!)

Koločep was a fun beach island on which to rest and not feel too rushed to run here and there; no need to "look at things" at the midpoint of this Balkan trip!

"back to Bosnia"

going back to Bosnia:

  • some of the group had had too much to drink
  • the "border guards" could only smile as we headed back

trip markers

  • 24th "country"
  • 16th "European country"
  • 14th "continental European country"
  • 3rd former Yugoslavian constituent country (out of 6)
    • after Serbia + Bosnia
  • 5th Slavic speaking country
    • after Poland + Bulgaria + Serbia + Bosnia
  • 3rd Serbo-Croatian speaking country
    • after Serbia + Bosnia
