2022 in [North] Macedonia (Skopje)
going into the mainstay of [North] Macedonia

October 8, 2022 : the Balkan sightseeing trip brought me to Skopje, the mainstay of [North] Macedonia:
came to Skopje in the evening, only to:
- take a side, late-evening ride to Kosovo, starting out at around 20:00
- go into this new land, unknown to many in the west, at around midnight
- come back to the hotel at 03:00
- wake up again at 07:00 to have breakfast and go to downtown Skopje
"downtown Skopje"
walked around downtown Skopje to see the:
- Museum of the City of Skopje
- a "former railway station" that fell to the earthquake of 1963
- its clock rests halted at the time of the earthquake
- we looked only at the outside of the building
- Mother Teresa birthstead
- born in Skopje
- Macedonia Square
- a water spout that speaks well of Alexander the Great
- built only in 2014 to "bring those old days back"
- many buildings had that old Greek look
- Bazaar
- on the north side of the Vardar River
- sat at a shop for Balkan coffee and watched the crowds go by
other things
- street markers had English, Macedonian and Albanian writing
- no worries about the "ATM machines" here!
- withdrew some [North] Macedonian denars (spelled denars in Macedonian)
- bought some magnets and other stuff on the streets of Old Skopje (see "Ramstore" for the lowest prices!)
I write "[North]" because of a name-wrangling that the "world" sought to untangle in 2018; they now call the land "North Macedonia" but the Macedonians themselves don't like saying "north", so I say "[North] Macedonia" as a workaround!
