August 20, 2014 : I had already spent 3 days in Italy; the next leg would take me go to the German-speaking parts of Europe:

"highlights"

Innsbruck

will never forget the charm (“Gemütlichkeit”) of downtown Innsbruck

  • a well-kept shopping street with houses of many kinds of hues
  • home of the Winter Olympics twice (in 1964 and again so soon in 1976), Innsbruck also had a lively ski mindset

Salzburg

about half a country away from Innsbruck:

  • the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
  • Mirabell Palace, setting of the film The Sound of Music
  • a stronghold called Festung Hohensalzburg (High Salzburg):

trip markers

  • 10th "lifetime country"
  • 4th "European country"
  • 3rd "mainland European country"
  • 1st "German-speaking country"
